The Truth About Internet Marketing Part 2

Don’t Quit Your Day Job Just Yet

One of the first things that you need to realize is this is not get rich quick.  If you want to build your own business you have to pay your dues.  There is no way around it, you can’t just put up a website or blog, place a few ads and expect the money to come rolling in.  If it were that easy everyone would be doing it.

Internet marketing is by no means get rich quick.  If you think that big paychecks are going to come rolling in week after week at the beginning then you will be very disappointed.  That is why you may need the safety net of your steady job for now so that you can keep bringing home a paycheck.

It may be hard to accept that you aren’t going to get rich overnight when there are so many ads out there screaming “get rich quick” or “easy money guaranteed”.

If you ever get a chance to talk to some of these gurus who are making big money I am willing to bet that they have a story about how they did not succeed right away.  They most likely made a lot of mistakes and even lost a decent amount of money before they figured everything out.

The good thing about being an internet marketer is that you will probably spend a lot less time and money building a business then you would  an offline business.  However, it could be several months of hard work before the money starts to trickle in.  In fact, many internet marketers give up before they ever see decent income.

That’s why I said, don’t give up your day job just yet….

With internet marketing there really are no guarantees so you need that guaranteed income from your job to fall back on.  Of course, if you are a stay at home mom who isn’t giving up an income then this wouldn’t be an issue, although you have to be careful and think long and hard about how you are going to invest in your business; especially if you are on a tight budget.

You may be feeling a bit discouraged as you read this but don’t be.  I just want to make sure that you don’t have to learn the hard way like so many struggling internet marketers have done; myself included.  Remember, if working online were really that easy everyone would be doing it and frankly, that would make life quite interesting. Imagine everyone working from home.  Who would be left to run all those offline businesses?  How would we shop for groceries, get our car serviced or go out to eat if these businesses no longer existed?

I like this quote from Jennifer AKA Potpiegirl, who has carved out a nice income with Squidoo:

“If you’re willing to do for a year what others wont, you can do for a lifetime what others can’t”!

It really is important to understand that this isn’t get rich quick and you may hit some stumbling blocks along the way.  If you really want to fire your boss then make sure that you have several months living expenses socked away.  Otherwise, you will have to work your internet marketing business part time while keeping your regular job.  And, unless you have  a spouse carrying the benefits you will not be just giving up your job but also much needed insurance coverage.

Just have a good plan going into this and don’t get discouraged.  Internet marketing can be rewarding not to mention the fact that working for yourself can be kind of fun.  Just have a plan and be prepared to work hard before seeing a steady income.

In parts 3 and 4 we will discuss the pros and cons of working from home.
